Paver Patios, Driveways & Walkways in Phoenix

Pavers are individual concrete or stone units set on a compacted base to form patios, driveways, walkways and pool decks. In Phoenix they beat poured concrete because they flex with caliche soil and monsoon heave instead of cracking, and any single unit can be lifted and reset rather than replacing a whole slab.

Solterra has designed and built paver installations across the Phoenix metro since 2012. Pavers are the most versatile hardscape surface for an Arizona yard: they handle full desert sun, they hold their color through monsoon runoff and 115-degree afternoons, and they give a patio, driveway or pool deck a finished, custom look that stamped concrete cannot match. The difference between a paver job that stays flat for decades and one that shifts in three years is entirely in the base preparation, and that is where we do our work.

Built for Phoenix heat and caliche soil

Phoenix soil is dense with caliche, a cement-hard calcium layer that sheds water instead of absorbing it, so during monsoon storms the ground swells and moves under any rigid surface. A poured slab has no way to give, so it cracks. A paver field is set on a compacted aggregate base with a bedding layer, which lets the surface flex slightly and settle evenly instead of splitting. For heat, lighter tones like tan and buff travertine or light concrete pavers stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark concrete, which matters on a pool deck or a patio you actually want to walk on barefoot in July.

Where pavers go in an Arizona backyard

We install pavers for back patios and entertaining areas, front walkways and courtyards, full driveways rated for vehicle loads, and the decks and coping around existing pools. Solterra does not build pools, but we do the hardscape around them: pool-deck pavers, coping and cool surfaces that tie the whole yard together. Pavers also pair naturally with the rest of an outdoor living build, so a patio can flow into an outdoor kitchen, a fire pit seating area, or an artificial turf lawn without an awkward transition.

The Solterra install: base prep that lasts

Every install starts with excavation to the right depth, then a compacted aggregate base built up in lifts, a screeded bedding layer, the pavers themselves, and polymeric sand swept into the joints to lock the field and resist weeds and ants. Edges are restrained so the field cannot spread over time. On driveways we build a deeper base to carry vehicle weight. Done this way, a paver surface in Phoenix can last 25 years or more, and because units are individual, a repair means lifting and resetting a few pavers rather than tearing out a slab.

Pavers: common questions

We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does a paver patio cost in Phoenix?

Most paver patios in the Phoenix area run about 18 to 30 dollars per square foot installed, depending on the paver material, the base work required, and the site access. Travertine and porcelain sit at the higher end, standard concrete pavers at the lower end. We give a firm number after seeing the space, with no obligation.

Are pavers better than concrete in Arizona?

For most Phoenix yards, yes. Poured concrete tends to crack as caliche soil moves during monsoon season, while a paver field flexes and settles evenly on its compacted base. Pavers also stay cooler in lighter tones, offer far more design options, and can be repaired one unit at a time instead of replacing an entire slab.

Do pavers get too hot to walk on in the summer?

Surface temperature depends mostly on color. Light tan, buff and gray pavers, and natural travertine, stay meaningfully cooler than dark concrete or dark pavers in direct Phoenix sun. For pool decks and patios you walk on barefoot, we steer you toward lighter tones and can point out the coolest options during the estimate.

How long do pavers last in the Arizona climate?

A properly installed paver surface in Phoenix commonly lasts 25 years or more. The base preparation is what determines longevity. Because pavers are individual units, isolated settling or a stain can be fixed by lifting and resetting a few pieces, so the surface can be kept looking new far longer than a slab.

Do paver joints need sand, and will weeds grow through?

We sweep polymeric sand into the joints, which hardens to lock the pavers together and resist weeds and ants far better than plain sand. Over years some re-sanding may be needed, which we also handle. Sealing on top adds stain resistance and deepens the color, and is optional based on the look you want.
