Pool Deck Pavers, Cool Deck & Coping in Phoenix
Pool deck pavers, cool-deck coatings and coping are the hardscape surfaces built around an existing pool. Solterra installs and resurfaces them, but does not build pools. In Phoenix they matter because the right light-toned, textured surface stays cooler underfoot in full desert sun and gives slip resistance when wet.
Solterra has built and resurfaced pool decks across the Phoenix metro since 2012. To be clear, we do not build or install pools. We work on everything around an existing pool: the deck surface, the coping that caps the pool edge, and the coatings that keep it cool. In the desert, a pool deck lives in relentless full sun, so the surface temperature, the slip resistance when it is splashed, and how it drains a monsoon downpour all decide whether the space is usable. That is the work we focus on.
Surfaces that stay cooler underfoot in full sun
The single biggest complaint about a Phoenix pool deck is a surface too hot to cross barefoot by mid-morning. Dark broom-finish concrete can climb well past a comfortable temperature in July. We attack that two ways. First, material and color: light-toned travertine, buff and gray pavers, and cool-deck coatings reflect more sun and hold less heat than dark surfaces. Second, texture: a matte, lightly textured finish reads cooler and grips better than a smooth, sealed one. A cool-deck coating troweled over sound concrete drops the surface temperature noticeably and adds a slip-resistant tooth, so the deck stays walkable through the hottest part of the day.
Coping, drainage and monsoon runoff around the pool
Coping is the capped edge where the deck meets the pool, and it does real work: it gives a finished, comfortable lip to grab and sit on, and it sheds splash-out water away from the shell. We set travertine, precast or paver coping to a clean line and a slight pitch so water runs off instead of pooling at the edge. Drainage is the other desert detail people miss. A deck has to move monsoon runoff away from both the pool and the house, and caliche soil sheds water rather than absorbing it. We grade the surface, and add channel drains or deck drains where the site needs them, so a summer storm clears fast.
Resurfacing an existing pool deck, HOA-ready
Most of our pool-deck work is a resurface, not a rebuild. If the existing concrete is structurally sound, we can lay pavers or travertine over it, or trowel on a cool-deck overlay, without demolishing the whole deck. Where the slab is cracked, heaved or sitting on poor base, we tear out and rebuild on compacted aggregate so the new surface stays flat. We walk the deck first and tell you honestly which path the slab calls for. Because so much of Phoenix sits inside HOAs and master-planned communities, we also build for the approval process: material and color choices that pass architectural review, and clean documentation for your submittal.

Concrete & Pool Decks: common questions
We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does a pool deck cost in Phoenix?
It depends on the surface. A cool-deck coating over sound concrete typically runs about 4 to 9 dollars per square foot, while pavers or travertine over or in place of concrete usually run about 15 to 30 dollars per square foot installed. We quote a firm number after seeing the deck, with no obligation.
What is the coolest surface for a pool deck in Arizona?
Light-toned, textured surfaces run coolest in full Phoenix sun. Natural travertine, buff and gray pavers, and cool-deck coatings all stay meaningfully cooler underfoot than dark broom-finish concrete. Color and texture matter more than the material name, and we point out the coolest options for your exposure during the estimate.
How long does cool-deck coating last in the desert?
A quality cool-deck coating on sound concrete generally holds up several years in Phoenix sun before it needs a refresh, and it can be recoated rather than torn out. Pavers and travertine decks last far longer, commonly 25 years or more, because the surface is stone set on a compacted base.
Do you build pools or just the deck around them?
We do the deck, coping and coatings around an existing pool. Solterra does not build, install or remodel pools, and we do not touch the shell, plumbing or equipment. We handle everything you walk on and the edge that caps the pool, and we coordinate cleanly with your pool contractor when one is involved.
Can you resurface my pool deck without tearing out the concrete?
Usually, yes. If the existing slab is structurally sound, we can lay pavers or travertine over it or trowel on a cool-deck overlay, which is faster and less costly than a tear-out. If the concrete is badly cracked or heaved, we rebuild on a proper base. We tell you which path your deck needs after walking it.
