Retaining Walls, Seat Walls & Terracing in Phoenix

A retaining wall is an engineered structure, usually built from concrete block, that holds back soil to level a slope, terrace a grade, or stop erosion. In Phoenix these walls are essential on hillside and view lots, where caliche soil and hard monsoon runoff will wash out an unsupported slope without proper drainage built behind the wall.

Solterra has designed and built retaining walls across the Phoenix metro since 2012. On the Valley's hillside and view lots, a wall is not decorative, it is what makes a usable, level yard possible on a grade. Retaining walls also solve the problems the desert throws at sloped ground: they hold back caliche soil, control monsoon runoff, and stop the erosion that undermines patios and foundations. Whether the job is one seat wall or a full terraced hillside, the engineering and the drainage behind the wall are what keep it standing.

Built for Arizona slopes, caliche soil and monsoon runoff

Phoenix and its foothill communities are full of graded and hillside lots, and the desert makes them harder to hold than they look. Caliche, the cement-hard calcium layer under our soil, sheds water instead of absorbing it, so when a monsoon storm dumps an inch of rain in an hour, that water runs downhill fast and scours any unsupported slope. A retaining wall built on an engineered footing holds that grade in place, and the gravel and drainage we build behind it give the water a path out instead of letting hydrostatic pressure push against the wall. Full desert sun and heat also rule out flimsy materials, which is why we build in concrete block.

Where retaining and seat walls go in a desert yard

Retaining walls do structural work: terracing a sloped backyard into flat, usable levels, holding a raised planting bed or pad, and stabilizing the cut where a hillside lot meets the house. The same wall system also builds the features that make a yard livable. Low seat walls wrap a fire pit or ring a patio to add seating without furniture, and planter walls frame raised beds for xeriscape and desert planting that thrive in our climate. Because we self-perform the surrounding hardscape too, a retaining wall ties straight into a paver patio, an outdoor kitchen, or turf, so the grade change looks intentional rather than tacked on.

The Solterra build: engineered footing and drainage behind the wall

Every wall starts below grade. We excavate to a compacted footing, set the first course dead level because every course above depends on it, and build up in concrete block sized to the height and load the wall carries. Behind the wall we place drainage gravel and a perforated drain or weep outlets, so monsoon water that collects behind the soil has somewhere to go instead of building pressure that bows or cracks a wall over time. Taller walls and hillside terracing get reinforcement and, where height requires it, engineering to meet code. Built this way and finished to match your hardscape, a block retaining wall in Phoenix holds its line for decades with almost no upkeep.

Retaining Walls: common questions

We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does a retaining wall cost in Phoenix?

Most retaining walls in the Phoenix area run about 40 to 75 dollars per square face foot installed, depending on wall height, the block or stone chosen, reinforcement, and the drainage work required behind it. Taller and hillside walls that need engineering sit higher. We give a firm number after seeing the grade and site.

Do retaining walls crack or fail in the Arizona climate?

Not when they are built right. Failures here almost always trace to missing drainage: water collects behind the wall and pressure pushes it out. We build on a compacted footing with gravel and drains behind the block, so a Solterra wall holds its line through monsoon seasons and years of desert heat.

Do I need HOA approval or a permit for a retaining wall?

Often, yes. Many Phoenix-area HOAs review wall height, color and materials, and taller walls can require a city permit and engineering. We build to match your community's standards and handle the engineering where the height calls for it. We can also walk you through what your HOA submittal needs.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

A typical residential retaining wall takes about 1 to 3 weeks, depending on length, height, how much excavation and grading the slope needs, and material lead times. Full hillside terracing with multiple levels runs longer. We give you a clear timeline before we start and keep you updated through the build.

What kinds of retaining walls does Solterra build?

We build structural block and CMU walls, low seat walls and raised planter walls, and multi-level terracing for hillside and view lots. We can face them to match your pavers or stone, and tie them into the surrounding patio, planting or turf. For very tall or complex slopes, we bring in engineering.
