Travertine Pavers, Patios & Pool Decks in Phoenix
Travertine is a natural limestone paver, quarried in tan and ivory tones, set on a compacted base for patios, walkways and the decks around existing pools. In Phoenix it is prized because its dense, porous surface stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete in full desert sun, and lighter ivory tones stay coolest of all.
Solterra has designed and built travertine installations across the Phoenix metro since 2012. Travertine is the premium natural stone most Valley homeowners want around a patio or an existing pool: a quarried limestone with soft, earthy color and a surface that stays cool in direct sun where poured concrete bakes. It is also a stone that rewards good installation. Set on a proper compacted base and sealed for the desert, travertine holds its color and its footing for decades. That base-first discipline is where a lasting job is won.
Why travertine stays cool in the Phoenix sun
Travertine is a natural stone with a dense, slightly porous surface that absorbs and holds far less heat than poured or stamped concrete, so it stays walkable when a concrete deck would be scorching in July. Color drives the rest: ivory and light tan travertine reflect more of the intense Arizona sun and stay coolest underfoot, while walnut and noce tones run warmer. Because the stone is quarried rather than dyed, that color will not fade or wash out under years of full desert exposure the way tinted concrete can. For a pool deck around an existing pool, or a patio you actually use barefoot in summer, that cooler surface is the whole point of choosing travertine here.
Where travertine works around a Phoenix yard
Travertine shines as a pool deck and coping around an existing pool, where its cool surface and non-slip honed finish make the most sense. Solterra does not build pools, but we design and lay the entire deck, coping and hardscape around one. Beyond the pool, travertine works for back patios, courtyards, entry walkways and full driveways when set on the right base. As with any hardscape here, the base carries the job: caliche soil sheds monsoon water and heaves, so we build a compacted aggregate base that lets a set-in-sand travertine field flex and settle rather than crack. Travertine also pairs cleanly with an outdoor kitchen, a fire feature or desert planting for one cohesive yard.
The Solterra install: base prep and desert sealing
Every travertine job starts underground. We excavate to depth, compact an aggregate base in lifts, screed a bedding layer, then set the travertine in the pattern you choose, most often a French pattern of mixed sizes. Edges are restrained so the field cannot spread, and joints are filled to lock the stone against ants and weeds. Because travertine is porous, sealing matters more here than in milder climates: a penetrating sealer helps the stone resist hard-water etching from pool splash, monsoon dust staining and sun bleaching, and it is worth refreshing every few years. Sealed and set on a real base, a travertine surface holds up in the Valley for decades with little upkeep.

Travertine: common questions

How much does a travertine patio or pool deck cost in Phoenix?
Installed travertine in the Phoenix area generally runs about 20 to 35 dollars per square foot, depending on the stone grade, the pattern, and the base and drainage work the site needs. It sits above standard concrete pavers because it is natural stone. We give a firm number after seeing the space, with no obligation.
Does travertine get too hot to walk on in Arizona summers?
Travertine runs cooler than concrete because natural stone holds less heat, and ivory or light tan tones stay coolest of all in direct sun. That is exactly why it is a favorite for pool decks and patios here. Darker walnut tones warm up more, so we steer you toward lighter stone for barefoot areas.
Does travertine need to be sealed, and how much maintenance is it?
We recommend sealing travertine in Phoenix because the stone is porous. A penetrating sealer helps it resist pool-splash etching, monsoon dust and sun bleaching, and refreshing it every few years keeps the color rich. Day to day it is low maintenance: sweep it, rinse it, and reseal on a simple cycle.
Will travertine pass my HOA in the Phoenix area?
Usually yes. Natural travertine in tan and ivory tones reads as a premium, neutral finish that most Valley HOAs approve without trouble. Some communities require submitting the stone color and layout for architectural approval first. We build to that spec and can provide the material details you need for the application.
Can you install travertine around my existing pool?
Yes. Travertine decks and coping around an existing pool are one of the things we do best, tying the surround into the rest of the yard. To be clear on scope: Solterra does not build or install pools. We design and build the deck, coping and hardscape around the pool you already have.
