Full-Service Landscape Design in Phoenix
Landscape design is the planning phase that maps your whole yard before any construction: layout, grading, materials, planting, lighting and irrigation drawn into one buildable plan. In Phoenix it matters because caliche soil, monsoon drainage, full-sun exposure and HOA rules all have to be solved on paper first, not discovered mid-build.
Solterra has designed and built outdoor spaces across the Phoenix metro since 2012, and design is where every good project starts. Landscape design is our full planning service: we walk your property, measure the grades and sun, and draw a single plan that ties hardscape, planting, lighting and irrigation together instead of bolting them on one at a time. Because we build what we draw, the plan is realistic, on budget and permit-ready. We also produce 3D renders so you see the finished yard before we break ground.
Designing for caliche, full sun and monsoon drainage
A desert yard has to be solved before it is built. We start every design by reading the site: where caliche sits close to the surface, how water sheets across the lot during a monsoon storm, and which areas bake in full afternoon sun versus the few that hold shade. Those constraints drive the plan. Grading and drainage are laid out so storm water moves away from the house and patios instead of pooling, planting beds are zoned by sun exposure and water need, and hardscape is oriented so the spaces you actually use stay usable in July. Solving all of this on paper is far cheaper than discovering it halfway through a build.
One plan for hardscape, planting, lighting and irrigation
Most Phoenix yards get built in disconnected pieces: a patio one year, plants the next, lighting whenever, and none of it quite fits. Our design work pulls all of it into a single plan, so the paver patio, the outdoor kitchen, the desert planting, the low-voltage lighting and the drip irrigation are drawn to work together and phased in a sensible order. Sleeving for irrigation lines and lighting conduit gets placed under hardscape before anything is poured or set, which avoids cutting into finished work later. We also produce 3D renders of the plan, so you can see materials, layout and sight lines and change them on screen instead of in concrete.
HOA approval and design-to-build, one team start to finish
Much of the Phoenix metro sits inside an HOA, and most require a submitted plan and approval before any work begins. A clear, dimensioned design with material and plant selections is exactly what those committees want to see, so our plans double as your submittal package and keep approval moving. From there, the same team that designed the yard builds it. There is no handoff to a separate crew who never saw the intent, no gap between the drawing and the reality, and one point of accountability from concept to final walkthrough. We also phase larger projects so the plan is complete on paper even when the build happens in stages as budget allows.

Landscape Design: common questions
We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does landscape design cost in Phoenix?
Design fees in the Phoenix area commonly run a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the size of the property and whether you want 3D renders. When Solterra designs and builds the project, we often credit the design fee toward construction. We give a firm number after seeing the space, with no obligation.
How long does the design process take?
For most residential yards, design takes about 2 to 4 weeks from the first site visit to a plan you can build from, depending on the size of the project and how many revisions you want. 3D renders add a little time. Construction is scheduled separately once the plan and materials are approved.
Will the design get through my HOA?
Most Phoenix-area HOAs require an approved plan before work starts, and a dimensioned design with material and plant selections is exactly what their committees review. Our plans are built to serve as your submittal package, which keeps approval moving. We have worked with Valley HOA requirements since 2012 and design with those rules in mind.
Do you design for the Arizona heat and low water use?
Yes. Desert-adapted, xeriscape planting, shade placement and drip irrigation are built into the plan from the start, not added later. We zone plants by sun and water need, orient patios and shade structures for July use, and grade the site so monsoon runoff drains away from the house rather than pooling.
Does landscape design include pool design?
We design and build everything around a pool: decks, coping, planting, shade, lighting and the hardscape that ties the yard together. Solterra does not build or install pools themselves. If you have an existing pool, or one going in under a separate pool contractor, we design the whole space around it to match.
