Landscape & Outdoor Lighting in Phoenix

Landscape lighting is a low-voltage LED system of path, up, wash and hardscape fixtures wired to a transformer to light a yard after dark. In Phoenix it extends the hours you can use an outdoor space that is too hot by day, adds safety and curb appeal, and shows off desert plants, walls and pavers all night.

Solterra has designed and installed landscape lighting across the Phoenix metro since 2012. In the desert most of the year the yard only becomes usable after sundown, so lighting is what turns a patio, path or planting bed into a space you actually spend evenings in. A well-planned low-voltage LED system does three jobs at once: it makes steps, drives and walkways safe to move through, it lifts curb appeal from the street, and it puts the architecture of the yard, the walls, the saguaros and the pavers, on display all night.

Built for desert heat, caliche and monsoon

An outdoor lighting system in Phoenix has to survive things a shaded climate never tests. Fixtures bake in full sun at 115 degrees, then get blasted with dust and driving rain when the monsoon rolls in, so we use sealed, heat-rated LED fixtures in brass or copper that will not corrode or fog like cheap cast aluminum. LED draws a fraction of the power of old halogen, runs cool, and lasts years without a bulb change on a hot roofline or a hard-to-reach wall. Burying low-voltage cable is its own desert problem: caliche is cement-hard, so we trench and route wire carefully rather than forcing it, and protect every connection against moisture.

What we light in an Arizona yard

Most desert yards use a mix of techniques, and we plan them together so the result reads as one design rather than a scatter of bright spots. Path and step lights make walkways, drives and grade changes safe to cross after dark. Uplighting is where the desert shines: a single well-aimed fixture turns a saguaro, an ocotillo or a mature palo verde into a sculptural silhouette against the house. Wash lighting grazes stucco walls, block fences and retaining walls to show texture, while hardscape lights tucked under seat-wall caps and into paver steps outline your patio. Around an existing pool we light the deck and surround, never the pool itself, to keep the whole space usable at night.

HOA-friendly, dark-sky design and the Solterra install

Much of the Valley sits inside an HOA, and many desert communities enforce dark-sky rules that limit glare and uplight spilling into the night sky. We design to that from the start: shielded, warm-white fixtures aimed down or close to the surface, with no harsh floods blasting past the rooflines. Every install begins with a night walk of the property to place fixtures where they earn their keep, then we size a transformer with headroom, run and bury the low-voltage cable, and set a photocell or timer so the system switches on at dusk on its own. Because the system is low-voltage, it is safe and easy to adjust or extend as your planting fills in and the yard grows.

Landscape Lighting: common questions

We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does landscape lighting cost in Phoenix?

Most low-voltage lighting projects here run about 200 to 400 dollars per fixture installed, which covers the fixture, wiring, transformer share and labor. A handful of accent lights costs far less than lighting a whole property. We walk the yard at dusk and quote a firm number, with no obligation.

Will the fixtures survive Phoenix heat and monsoon storms?

Yes, if they are the right fixtures. We install sealed, heat-rated LED units in brass or copper, which shrug off 115-degree sun, blowing dust and monsoon rain far better than the cheap cast-aluminum fixtures big-box kits use. Every wire connection is sealed against moisture, and quality LED fixtures typically last many years without a bulb change.

Will landscape lighting meet my HOA and dark-sky rules?

In most cases, yes. Many Valley HOAs and desert communities restrict glare and light thrown up into the sky. We design with shielded, warm-white fixtures aimed down or across surfaces, not floods blasting upward, so the yard looks intentional and stays within the rules. If your HOA has a submittal process, we can supply the fixture details you need.

Does landscape lighting run up my electric bill?

Not meaningfully. Low-voltage LED fixtures draw a small fraction of the power old halogen systems used, so even a full yard of lighting adds little to a monthly bill. A photocell or timer runs the system only from dusk to a set hour, so nothing burns power in daylight. It is one of the cheaper upgrades to operate.

Can you add lighting to a yard we already had built?

Yes. Low-voltage lighting is one of the easiest systems to retrofit, so we regularly add it to finished patios, existing paver work and mature desert planting without tearing anything up. We handle the low-voltage side only; the transformer plugs into an existing exterior outlet. If a new outlet or panel work is needed, that is a licensed electrician's job.
