Irrigation, Drip Systems & Drainage in Phoenix
Irrigation and drainage is the water-management system for a desert yard: hydrozoned drip lines and sprinklers that put water only where plants need it, plus grading and French drains that carry monsoon runoff away from your home. In Phoenix it protects plantings from full-sun heat and protects hardscape from flooding.
Solterra has designed and installed irrigation and drainage systems across the Phoenix metro since 2012. In the Valley, water is the single hardest variable to get right: too little and desert plantings scorch in full sun, too much and you waste money while rotting roots and undermining hardscape. Add monsoon storms that dump an inch of rain in an hour onto caliche soil that will not absorb it, and water management becomes as structural as any wall we build. We design systems that deliver water precisely and move storm runoff safely away.
Hydrozoned drip built for desert plants and water bills
In the desert, spraying a whole yard with pop-up sprinklers wastes most of the water to evaporation before it reaches a root. We design drip systems that run water slowly at the base of each plant, grouped into hydrozones so cactus, shrubs and trees each get their own schedule instead of one setting drowning some plants and starving others. Emitters sit under the mulch or gravel of a xeriscape, so almost nothing is lost to Phoenix sun and wind. Paired with a smart Wi-Fi controller that adjusts to the season and skips a cycle after rain, a well-zoned drip system cuts outdoor water use sharply while keeping plantings healthy.
Sprinkler repair, leak detection and seasonal tune-ups
Most of the irrigation we touch is repair, not new install. Phoenix heat cracks poly tubing, sun turns fittings brittle, and a hidden leak can push a water bill up for months before anyone notices a wet spot or a plant that suddenly thrives while its neighbors wilt. We find and fix breaks, replace worn valves and heads, cap orphaned zones, and reset controllers that drifted off schedule. Twice a year we recommend a tune-up: checking every emitter and head before the summer peak and again as things cool, adjusting run times for the season, and clearing the clogs that hard Valley water leaves behind. Small fixes here save real money on every bill.
Monsoon drainage: French drains and grading that protect the yard
Water management in the Valley is not only about getting water to plants, it is about getting storm water away from your house. Caliche soil sheds a hard monsoon rain almost like pavement, so runoff pools against foundations, floods low patios, and washes out planting beds and decomposed granite. We regrade problem areas to fall away from the structure, install French drains and channel drains to intercept water, and run it to a safe outlet or a dry well where code allows. Done alongside a hardscape build, drainage is designed in from the start, so a new paver patio or retaining wall works with the water instead of trapping it. This is the same base-first discipline behind everything we build.

Irrigation & Drainage: common questions
We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does an irrigation system cost in Phoenix?
A new drip irrigation system for a typical Phoenix yard usually runs about 2,500 to 6,000 dollars, depending on zone count, controller and yard size. Simple sprinkler repairs are far less, often a service-call minimum plus parts. Drainage work is quoted separately by scope. We give a firm number after seeing the space, with no obligation.
Does Phoenix heat wreck irrigation lines?
It does over time. Full desert sun makes exposed poly tubing and cheap fittings brittle, and hard Valley water clogs emitters. We bury lines below the surface, use UV-rated components at any exposed points, and set emitters sized for our water. Built this way, a drip system holds up for many years with routine seasonal tune-ups.
Will a drip system meet HOA and water-restriction rules?
Yes. Most Phoenix-area HOAs and cities actively encourage low-water, drip-fed xeriscape, and some offer rebates for converting grass to desert landscaping. A hydrozoned drip system with a smart controller is exactly the kind of efficient setup those programs favor. If your HOA has specific plant or coverage rules, we design the layout to fit them.
Do I really need drainage for monsoon season?
If water pools against your house, floods a patio, or washes out gravel and beds after a storm, yes. Caliche soil barely absorbs a hard monsoon rain, so it runs off fast. French drains, channel drains and regrading move that water to a safe outlet before it damages your foundation or hardscape. We assess drainage during the estimate.
Do you install irrigation without a full landscape project?
Yes. We handle standalone drip installs, sprinkler and valve repairs, controller upgrades and drainage work on their own, not only as part of a larger build. What we do not do is service pools or pool equipment. Our scope is landscape water: getting it to plants efficiently and moving storm water safely away.
