Retaining Walls in Tempe, AZ

Solterra designs and builds block retaining walls, seat walls and planter walls across Tempe, from the tight older lots around Maple-Ash and Mitchell Park to South Tempe near the Butte. On flat, built-out lots we use low walls to level grade, carve usable outdoor rooms and hold flood-irrigation water back with proper drainage behind every wall.

Tempe is one of the flattest, most built-out cities in the Valley, a land-locked college town where the raw desert ran out decades ago. Most homes here went up between the 1950s and the 1980s on tight urban lots, so retaining walls do a different job than they do in the foothills. You will not find many dramatic hillside terraces around ASU or Broadmor. What you find instead are subtle grade changes: yards that sit a foot or two off the neighbor, sunken side yards that catch runoff, and small lots that feel cramped because every square foot sits on one flat plane. A low block wall is often the cleanest way to solve those problems and pull a usable outdoor room out of a tight Tempe backyard.

The older core around Maple-Ash and Mitchell Park still runs on flood irrigation, and that changes how a wall has to be built. When you flood a yard on schedule, water needs somewhere controlled to sit and drain, so we build retaining and planter walls with gravel backfill, weep holes and a drain line behind the block instead of a solid dam that traps water against your foundation. The same logic covers monsoon storms, when Tempe's caliche soil sheds a summer downpour fast and washes out raised beds and turf edges. A properly drained seat wall or planter wall holds the soil, contains the irrigation, and doubles as built-in seating, which matters on the smaller lots common south of the university and through Broadmor.

Tempe is not entirely flat. Lots near Tempe Butte and the Papago edge, split-level yards, and some South Tempe blocks below the canal grade do carry real elevation change, and that is where structural retaining earns its keep. On those sites we build engineered block walls to hold a cut, terrace a slope into two or three usable levels, and turn an awkward drop into a seating terrace or a raised planting bed. Even on flat lots, a short terrace wall adds dimension that a single-plane yard lacks, stepping a patio up to turf or framing a fire feature. In the master-planned pockets like Warner Ranch and The Lakes, we build these walls to the HOA's material and height standards.

Every wall we build starts below grade, with a compacted footing dug into Tempe's caliche so the base does not heave when the ground moves. We build in block or CMU, reinforce taller walls with rebar, grout and geogrid, and finish them with stucco, veneer or a smooth cap to match your pavers, travertine and the rest of the yard. Under city of Tempe and Maricopa County rules, a retaining wall over three feet, or almost any wall on a slope, needs an engineered plan and a permit, and as a licensed contractor since 2012 under ROC 359628 we handle that. We also build seat walls and planter walls around existing pool decks, though Solterra builds the hardscape, not the pool itself.

Because almost every Tempe project is a remodel and not a blank slate, retaining walls here often start with tear-out. Many of these yards already have a failing wall: a dry-stacked block border from the 1970s with no footing and no drainage that has started to lean, bow or crack after decades of flood irrigation and root pressure from Tempe's mature trees. We remove the old wall, correct the drainage that caused it to fail, and rebuild on a real base so the new wall lasts. From there the wall ties into the larger design, stepping into a paver patio, a turf run or a planting bed, so it reads as part of one finished backyard rather than an afterthought bolted onto the yard.

Retaining Walls in Tempe: common questions

We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does a retaining wall cost in Tempe?

In Tempe, block retaining walls typically run about 40 to 75 dollars per square foot of wall face. The big cost drivers here are tear-out of an old failing wall, the drainage work behind it, and wall height, since anything over three feet needs engineering. We give a firm, no-obligation price after seeing your lot.

Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a retaining wall in Tempe?

Often, yes. The city of Tempe requires an engineered plan and permit for walls over three feet or on a slope, and communities like Warner Ranch and The Lakes add HOA design review. We handle the permitting under ROC 359628 and build to your HOA's height and material standards.

My Tempe yard is flat. Do I even need a retaining wall?

Often a low one, yes. On Tempe's flat, tight lots we use short seat and planter walls to level a grade change against the neighbor, terrace a single-plane yard into usable zones, contain flood-irrigation and monsoon water, and add built-in seating. They solve real problems even where there is no hillside.

How long does a retaining wall project take in Tempe?

Most residential walls take about 1 to 3 weeks on site, depending on length, height and whether we are removing an old wall first. Engineered or permitted walls on sloped South Tempe lots run longer because of plan review and deeper footings. We give a schedule with your estimate.

What kinds of retaining and seat walls do you build in Tempe?

We build structural block retaining walls, low seat walls, raised planter walls and terrace walls, all with gravel backfill and drainage behind the block. We also build seat and planter walls around existing pool decks. Solterra builds the hardscape and outdoor living, not the pool itself.
