Outdoor Kitchens in Tempe, AZ

Solterra builds outdoor kitchens across Tempe, from tight older lots in Maple-Ash and Mitchell Park to the larger South Tempe yards in Warner Ranch and near The Lakes. On these mostly remodeled 1950s-to-1980s properties, we replace tired slabs and dated grills with masonry BBQ islands, bar seating and pizza ovens built to hold up in full desert sun.

Tempe is one of the most built-out cities in the Valley, a dense college town wrapped around ASU with almost no raw land left. That means nearly every outdoor kitchen we build here is a remodel, not new construction. The homes run from 1950s ranch lots in Maple-Ash and Broadmor to 1970s and 1980s tract houses south toward Corona del Sol, and their backyards were never designed for how people cook and entertain outdoors today. A tired grill on a cracked slab is the norm. A permanent, built-in island is the upgrade. On lots this established, the value of an outdoor kitchen is turning a dated, underused yard into the room where the household actually spends its evenings.

Tempe lots are tighter and more urban than the master-planned yards out in Gilbert or Eastmark, so the design problem is fitting a real kitchen into limited space without crowding it. We lay out compact L-shaped and straight galley islands that put the grill, counters and storage along one or two runs, then use bar seating on the outer edge so guests gather without eating up the whole patio. Access matters too: on a narrow Tempe side yard we plan how block, stone and appliances reach the backyard before the build starts, since many of these homes have gates barely wide enough for a wheelbarrow. The goal is a full outdoor kitchen that feels generous on a lot that is anything but oversized.

The island itself is masonry, not furniture. We build the core from concrete block or steel-framed masonry set on footings dug deep into Tempe's caliche, which is hard to cut but rock-solid once you reach it, so the island will not settle or crack as the ground moves through monsoon season. On older homes we often demo an aging concrete slab or a failed builder-grade BBQ first, and we route gas, water and electrical before the new hardscape goes down. That trenching takes real care here: the mature trees Tempe is known for have wide root systems, and the flood-irrigated yards around Maple-Ash and Mitchell Park need their berms and lines protected. Counters are granite, tile or sealed concrete, and every stainless component is outdoor-rated so nothing rusts in the sun.

Where you live in Tempe shapes the approval path. Master-planned communities like Warner Ranch and The Lakes run HOA design review, and the older, historic-leaning streets around Maple-Ash have stricter rules on exterior changes, so we prepare the plans and material specs and handle the submittal. Because an outdoor kitchen means a gas line, we also pull the City of Tempe permits rather than leaving that to you. South of Guadalupe the lots open up, in Warner Ranch and the Corona del Sol area, and the projects grow: a full kitchen paired with a travertine deck around an existing pool. To be clear, Solterra does not build pools. We build the outdoor kitchen and the hardscape that ties your existing pool and patio together.

An island only works if the space around it does. We plan the kitchen as one part of a full patio: a paver or travertine surface underfoot, and shade overhead so the cook is not standing in July sun. Tempe's flat terrain, away from Tempe Butte, means patios sit clean and level with the right base prep, and the mature trees many of these older lots already have can do real work shading a west-facing counter. Where the canopy is thin we add a pergola or ramada and orient the grill away from the harsh afternoon exposure. Done together, the kitchen, patio and shade read as one designed room that stays usable spring through fall, which in Tempe is most of the year.

Outdoor Kitchens in Tempe: common questions

We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does an outdoor kitchen cost in Tempe?

Outdoor kitchens are a high-ticket, custom build, so cost tracks the size of the island, the appliances and counters you choose, and the site work. In Tempe the big driver is demolition and utility routing, since most projects mean tearing out an old slab and trenching gas on an established lot. We quote firm after seeing the yard.

Do I need HOA approval for an outdoor kitchen in Tempe?

Often, yes. Communities like Warner Ranch and The Lakes run HOA design review, and historic-leaning areas around Maple-Ash have tighter rules on exterior changes. Because the island also involves a gas line, the City of Tempe requires a permit. We prepare the plans and handle both submittals so the project clears review the first time.

How long does an outdoor kitchen build take in Tempe?

Most Tempe outdoor kitchens run about 2 to 6 weeks on site, depending on scope. A straightforward BBQ island is on the shorter end, while a full kitchen with a pizza oven, bar and surrounding patio takes longer. Demolition of an old slab, HOA review and gas permitting can add lead time before we break ground.

Can you fit an outdoor kitchen in a small Tempe backyard?

Yes, and it is most of what we do here. Tempe lots are tighter than the newer East Valley subdivisions, so we design compact L-shaped or galley islands and use bar seating to save patio space. We also plan access early, since many older Tempe homes have narrow side gates that block, stone and appliances must pass through.

Can you build an outdoor kitchen near my existing Tempe pool?

Yes. In South Tempe yards around Warner Ranch and Corona del Sol, a kitchen next to an existing pool is a common request. We build the island and tie it into a travertine or paver pool deck so the whole space connects. To be clear, Solterra does not build pools, only the hardscape around them.
