Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces in Phoenix

A fire pit or outdoor fireplace is a permanent gas or wood-burning fire feature built into your hardscape as a backyard gathering point. In Phoenix they earn their keep on cool desert nights, extending usable patio season from fall through spring when evenings drop well below the daytime high.

Solterra has designed and built fire features across the Phoenix metro since 2012. A fire pit is the anchor that turns a patio into a place people actually linger, and in the desert that value is real: our best outdoor months are the cool ones, and a fire feature stretches evenings on the patio from October into April. We build both gas and wood-burning pits and full custom fireplaces, matched to your pavers, your seating and your setback rules, and engineered for full-sun exposure and monsoon weather so the finish holds up.

Gas or wood-burning: choosing for the desert

The first decision is fuel. Natural gas pits light instantly, throw consistent heat, and never trigger a no-burn worry, which matters in Maricopa County where wood fires are restricted on high-pollution winter days. We can run a dedicated gas line off your meter or plumb a hidden propane tank. Wood-burning pits give a bigger flame, real crackle and radiant heat for larger gatherings, but need clearance from the house and eaves and are subject to those seasonal burn bans. Many Valley homeowners land on gas for the patio and reserve wood for open desert lots. We walk you through both during the estimate.

Built to hold up in full sun and monsoon

A fire feature sits in full desert sun all day and takes hard temperature swings, so material choice matters. We build permanent pits and fireplaces from masonry block cores faced with stone veneer, pavers or stucco that hold color under relentless UV, and we spec stainless burners, pans and igniters that shrug off monsoon humidity and dust. Footings are set below the caliche layer so seasonal soil movement does not crack the structure. On exposed lots we can add a wind guard or recommend a fireplace over an open pit, since a solid back wall blocks the gusts that make an open flame flicker and waste gas on windy desert evenings.

Placing a fire feature: setbacks, HOAs and the whole yard

Where a fire feature goes is as important as how it is built. Most Phoenix-area subdivisions sit under an HOA and many cities require a permit and inspection for a gas line, so we plan location around setbacks, overhead clearances and utility lines before we pour anything. We design the pit or fireplace as part of the whole yard, tying it into your paver patio, seating walls, an outdoor kitchen or a turf lawn so it reads as one build rather than a bolt-on. Around an existing pool we keep safe clearances and can add a fire-and-water feature where flame meets the water line. We handle the permitting so you do not have to.

Fire Pits & Fireplaces: common questions

We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does a fire pit cost in Phoenix?

A built-in gas fire pit in the Phoenix area typically runs about 3,000 to 8,000 dollars, depending on size, materials, and whether we run a new gas line. Custom stone fireplaces cost more. Wood-burning pits sit at the lower end since there is no gas plumbing. We give a firm number after seeing the space, with no obligation.

How much does an outdoor fireplace cost, and how is it different from a fire pit?

A custom outdoor fireplace in Phoenix typically starts around 8,000 dollars and rises with height, stone selection, and a chimney or flue. A fireplace has a back wall and hearth, so it directs heat and blocks desert wind, while a fire pit stays open on all sides for a lower, shared gathering. We quote each after seeing the space.

Can I use a fire pit year-round in Phoenix, or are there burn restrictions?

Gas fire pits can be used year-round with no restrictions. Wood-burning fires are another matter: Maricopa County issues no-burn days on high-pollution winter afternoons when wood fires are prohibited valley-wide. If you want a fire feature you can light any night, we steer you toward gas. We cover this during the estimate.

How long does a fire pit install take, and do I need HOA or city approval?

A built-in fire pit usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks once we start, longer for a large fireplace or when it is part of a full patio build. Most Valley cities require a permit and inspection for the gas line, and many HOAs need design approval. We handle the permitting and can help with the HOA submittal.

Can you build a fire feature near my existing pool or on an existing patio?

Yes. We build fire pits and fireplaces at safe clearances around existing pools and can tie a new feature into an existing paver or concrete patio, though a tie-in sometimes needs matching or reworking edges. Solterra does not build or install pools; we design and build the hardscape and fire features around them.
