Concrete & Pool Decks in Phoenix, AZ
Solterra builds and resurfaces pool decks around existing Phoenix pools: light-toned paver and travertine decks, cool-deck coatings and coping that stay cooler underfoot in full desert sun. To be clear, we build the hardscape around your existing pool, not the pool itself. On flat, caliche-bound lots from Arcadia to Desert Ridge, we grade the deck to clear monsoon runoff fast.
Let's be clear up front: Solterra does not build, install or remodel pools. We work on everything around an existing pool, the deck you walk on, the coping that caps the pool edge, and the coatings that keep the surface cool. In Phoenix that work matters more than almost anywhere, because a deck lives in relentless full sun and the single biggest complaint we hear is a surface too hot to cross barefoot by mid-morning. The homes range widely, from established pools on Arcadia and Biltmore estate lots to newer builds out in Desert Ridge and Ahwatukee, but the desert problem is the same: heat, caliche, and a monsoon that dumps water fast.
We bring the surface temperature down two ways. First, material and color: light-toned travertine, buff and gray pavers, and cool-deck coatings reflect more sun and hold far less heat than the dark broom-finish concrete that bakes around so many older Phoenix pools. Second, texture: a matte, lightly textured finish reads cooler and grips better when it is splashed than a smooth, sealed one. A cool-deck coating troweled over sound concrete drops the surface temperature noticeably and adds a slip-resistant tooth, while a full paver or travertine deck gives you the coolest, longest-lasting surface and a finished, custom look the old gray slab never had.
Coping is the capped edge where the deck meets the pool, and it does real work: it gives a comfortable lip to sit on and grab, and it sheds splash-out water away from the shell. We set travertine, precast or paver coping to a clean line with a slight pitch so water runs off instead of pooling at the edge. Drainage is the desert detail most people miss. Phoenix lots are flat and caliche sheds water rather than absorbing it, so a deck has to be graded to carry monsoon runoff away from both the pool and the house, and we add channel or deck drains where the site needs them. Caliche also heaves and cracks a rigid slab over time, which is why a paver deck set on a compacted base outlasts poured concrete here.
Most of our pool-deck work is a resurface, not a tear-out. If the existing concrete is structurally sound, we can lay pavers or travertine over it or trowel on a cool-deck overlay without demolishing the whole deck, which is faster and easier on the budget. Where the slab is cracked, heaved or sitting on poor base, we rebuild on compacted aggregate so the new surface stays flat, and we walk the deck first and tell you honestly which path it calls for. Because so much of Phoenix sits inside HOAs and master-planned communities like Desert Ridge, we also build for the approval process with review-friendly materials and clean documentation. Budgets run a wide range, from an affordable cool-deck coating to a full travertine deck and coping.

Concrete & Pool Decks in Phoenix: common questions
We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.

How much does a pool deck cost in Phoenix?
It depends on the surface. A cool-deck coating over sound concrete typically runs about 4 to 9 dollars per square foot, while pavers or travertine over or in place of concrete usually run about 15 to 30 dollars per square foot installed. The size of the deck and how much old concrete has to come out also drive the number. We quote a firm price after seeing the deck, with no obligation.
What is the coolest surface for a pool deck in Phoenix?
Light-toned, textured surfaces run coolest in full desert sun. Natural travertine, buff and gray pavers, and cool-deck coatings all stay meaningfully cooler underfoot than dark broom-finish concrete. Color and texture matter more than the material name, and we point out the coolest options for your exposure during the estimate.
Do you build pools, or just the deck around them?
We do the deck, coping and coatings around an existing pool. Solterra does not build, install or remodel pools, and we do not touch the shell, plumbing or equipment. We handle everything you walk on and the edge that caps the pool, and we coordinate cleanly with your pool contractor when one is involved.
Can you resurface my deck without tearing out the concrete?
Usually, yes. If the existing slab is structurally sound, we can lay pavers or travertine over it or trowel on a cool-deck overlay, which is faster and less costly than a tear-out. If the concrete is badly cracked or heaved by caliche, we rebuild on a proper base. We tell you which path your deck needs after walking it.
Will the new deck handle Phoenix heat and monsoon storms?
Yes, when it is built for them. We grade the deck to carry monsoon runoff away from the pool and the house, and a paver or travertine surface set on a compacted base flexes with caliche movement instead of cracking like a rigid slab. Light tones and textured finishes keep it walkable through 115-degree afternoons.
