Concrete & Pool Decks in Paradise Valley, AZ
Solterra builds and resurfaces the pool deck around an existing pool in Paradise Valley, AZ: travertine and paver surrounds, coping and cool-deck coatings. On these acre-plus estates between Camelback and Mummy Mountain, nearly every lot has a resort-style pool, and we set a light-toned, slip-resistant surface that stays cool underfoot in full sun. To be clear, we build the hardscape around your existing pool, not the pool.
The pool deck is the single most-requested project we do in Paradise Valley, because nearly every estate here already has a pool and most of them are resort-scale. What these decks usually lack is a surround that matches the house. We set travertine and light-toned paver decks, clean coping along the pool edge, and cool-deck coatings that refresh a tired slab. To be clear up front, Solterra does not build, install or remodel pools. We build the hardscape around the pool you already have, from the coping line out to the rest of the yard.
In full Paradise Valley sun a dark, smooth deck can climb past a comfortable temperature by mid-morning, which is the complaint we hear most. We fight that two ways. Material and color come first: light-toned travertine, buff and gray pavers, and troweled cool-deck coatings reflect more sun and hold less heat than dark broom-finish concrete. Texture comes second: a matte, lightly textured finish reads cooler and grips better when it is splashed. On estates where the finish is expected to match a custom home, travertine is the surface we are asked for most, and it happens to be one of the coolest underfoot.
Terrain drives the engineering on these lots. Many Paradise Valley pools sit on terraced, sloped ground around Mummy Mountain and Clearwater Hills, so the deck has to be graded to shed both splash-out and monsoon runoff away from the pool and the house, not toward them. Caliche soil sheds water rather than absorbing it, so a hard storm has to clear fast, and we add channel or deck drains where the site calls for them. On slopes of 15 percent or steeper, the grading falls under the town's Hillside Building Committee, which reviews drainage before work begins, and we design the deck to clear that review.
Most of our Paradise Valley deck work is a resurface rather than a tear-out. If the existing slab is structurally sound, we can lay travertine or pavers over it, or trowel on a cool-deck overlay, without demolishing the whole deck. Where the concrete is cracked, heaved or sitting on poor base, we rebuild on compacted aggregate so the new surface stays flat for decades. We walk the deck first and tell you honestly which path the slab calls for. Coping gets the same care: travertine, precast or paver caps set to a clean line and a slight pitch so splash water sheds away from the edge.

Concrete & Pool Decks in Paradise Valley: common questions
We've answered the most common questions to help you understand the process, timing, and what to expect.
Didn't find your answer? Get in touch →
How much does a pool deck cost in Paradise Valley?
It depends on the surface. A cool-deck coating over sound concrete typically runs about 4 to 9 dollars per square foot, while travertine or pavers over or in place of concrete usually run about 15 to 30 dollars per square foot installed. Large estate decks and premium travertine sit at the higher end. We give a firm, no-obligation number after seeing the deck.
What is the coolest pool deck surface for a full-sun estate lot?
Light-toned, textured surfaces run coolest in Paradise Valley sun. Natural travertine, buff and gray pavers, and troweled cool-deck coatings all stay meaningfully cooler underfoot than dark broom-finish concrete. Color and texture matter more than the material name, and travertine is both the coolest and the finish most of our estate clients ask for. We point out the best options for your exposure during the estimate.
Do you build the pool, or just the deck around it?
Just the deck, coping and coatings around an existing pool. Solterra does not build, install or remodel pools, and we do not touch the shell, plumbing or equipment. We build the hardscape around the pool you already have, and we coordinate cleanly with your pool contractor when one is involved.
Our pool is on a hillside lot near Mummy Mountain. Can you still redo the deck?
Yes. Sloped lots at 15 percent grade or steeper fall under the town's Hillside Building Committee, which reviews grading and drainage before work begins. We engineer the deck to shed monsoon runoff and splash-out safely off the slope, away from the pool and the house, and design it to clear that review.
Can you resurface our deck without tearing out the concrete, and how long does it take?
Usually yes. If the slab is structurally sound, we lay travertine or pavers over it or trowel on a cool-deck overlay, which is faster and less costly than a tear-out. Most deck resurfaces run about 1 to 3 weeks on site, while a full rebuild on new base takes longer. We tell you which path your deck needs after walking it.
